Leaf Note 1: Welcome to your Journalling Journey — journalling inspiration

Leaf Notes are thoughtful snippets of inspiration from Polly's Paper Garden. Each one shares ideas, knowledge, creative techniques and gentle encouragement to help you explore the beautiful world of journalling, paper crafting and mindful creativity. Collect them, enjoy them and let them inspire your own creative journey.

A Gentle Beginning – Growing your Journal

Thank you for choosing Polly’s Paper Garden collection. I hope opening your box feels like stepping through a little garden gate into a place of calm, creativity and kindness.

What is journalling?

Journalling is simply the practice of putting your thoughts onto paper. It doesn’t have to be beautifully written, perfectly organised or even make complete sense. It is your space to think, reflect, dream, create and simply be yourself.

Some people write pages every day, while others fill their journal with a few words, sketches, pressed flowers, photographs, favourite quotes or treasured memories. There are no rules – only what feels right for you.

Why does it help?

Life can often feel busy and overwhelming. Journalling gives your mind a chance to slow down.

People use journalling to reflect on their feelings, notice things they are grateful for, explore their thoughts and make a little room for creativity. You can try five or ten minutes and see what feels helpful to you.

Getting Started

If you’re not sure what to write, try one of these simple prompts:

Or simply begin with whatever is on your mind.

Remember: There are no mistakes in creative journalling. Every page reflects a moment in your life, and every layer, mark and word becomes part of your own unique story. The most beautiful journals are not the neatest or the most artistic – they are the ones created with authenticity and joy.

Different Ways to Journal

There is no single way to create a journal. Some pages may be filled with words, others with colour, texture or treasured keepsakes. Let your journal evolve naturally and enjoy experimenting with different techniques.

Layering Backgrounds

Begin with a foundation by adding colour or pattern to your page. This could be decorative paper, scrapbook paper, tissue paper, old book pages, watercolour washes or light stamping. Building layers creates depth and gives your page its own unique character.

Collage

Collage is one of the easiest and most enjoyable ways to journal. Combine papers, postcards, tickets, magazine cuttings, photographs, pressed flowers. Washi tape, labels or ephemera that hold meaning for you. There are no rules – simply arrange and stick until it feels right.

Texture

Texture brings your pages to life. Try adding ribbon, lace, fabric, twine, dried botanicals, embossed papers, handmade paper or dimensional embellishments. Mixing different materials creates pages that are both beautiful to look at and enjoyable to touch.

Doodling

You don’t need to be an artist to doodle. Simple flowers, leaves, hearts, stars, swirls, borders or tiny illustrations can add charm and help you relax. Doodling is a wonderfully mindful activity, allowing your hand to move freely while your mind gently slows.

Writing from the heart

Of course, your words are just as important as your creativity. Write about your day, your hopes, favourite memories, dreams, quotes that inspire you or simply how you’re feeling in the moment. Your journal is a safe space where there is no judgment and no expectation of perfection.

Your Garden, Your Journey

Like every garden, your journal will grow over time. Some pages will be full of colour and joy, while others may hold sadness, uncertainty or change. Every page has value because it tells part of your story.

There is no perfect journal and no perfect journal writer. There is only you, this moment, and a blank page waiting patiently.

So make yourself a cup of tea, light a candle if you wish, settle into your favourite chair, and allow yourself a few precious moments of peace.

Welcome to your journey.

With love
